Kananaskis Area
PRESCRIBED FIRE UPDATE
September 02, 2010

WHAT'S HAPPENING?
Guard burning for Buller Creek prescribed fire resumes Friday, September 3.
Forecasted weather for September 3-4 should enable the completion of burning for the southern guard of the Buller Creek prescribed fire unit.  As of September 7th, the focus will shift to the Evan-Thomas prescribed fire.  Operations at that site will commence as weather conditions permit.

The Buller Creek prescribed fire is 950 hectares and is located in the Bow Valley Wildland and Spray Valley Provincial Parks, approximately 20 kilometres south of Canmore.

The Evan-Thomas prescribed fire is 408 hectares, located in the Elbow-Sheep Wildland Provincial Park in the Kananaskis Valley.  The burn is about 30 kilometres southeast of Canmore, and five kilometres southeast of Kananaskis Vililage on Highway 40.

HOW THIS MIGHT AFFECT YOU:
Every effort will be made to minimize the impact to visitors and nearby communities, however firefighters, aircraft and equipment will be active in the area.  Open flame and smoke may be visible, but is not expected to be significant.

Please check the Kananaskis website or visit an Information Centre in the area prior to hiking or touring near the burn area.

For traveller convenience, an information/viewpoint area will be available at Mt. Shark helipad while guard burning is in process.

WHY?
By imitating wildfire in a controlled manner, prescribed fires in Kananaskis Country will:

help protect nearby communities from the threat of future wildfires in the area,
restore the diversity of the vegetation,
improve and expand wildlife habitat and
remove prime pockets of potential mountain pine beetle habitat.

GAUGE AND SAVE
Gauge and Save is an event that CRAZ has been able to resume this summer. In partnership with Calgary Co-op, we will visit 16 gas stations over a period of three weeks to check tire pressures on customers’ vehicles because:
Properly inflated tires + Properly tuned up vehicles = Better Fuel Efficiency = Good Air Quality
The CRAZ and Calgary Co-op Gauge and Save was a huge success! We engaged with approximately 660 people and checked approximately 1920 tires!
